Last weekend I attended the New voices Writers’ festival in Eltham. Instigated by the famous Eltham bookshop, this festival has been a feature of Eltham arts community for many years. Jane Sullivan, author and Melbourne Age literary columnist, gave the keynote address and in discussing the adventure of books she described my childhood. People of a certain age remember wanting to climb a tree that opened onto wonderful and sometimes scary lands. And how many of us wanted to catch a smuggler or belong to a secret society like the Silent Three? The world of children’s books provided adventures aplenty and of course, as we mature, the world of books provides exploration of other lives and other ways of thinking. While there are books, there are adventures. Thank you Jane, for a wonderful address.
